Too bad Hancock moved to more mainstream music. These three albums are top drawer. Some of the best music ever made. For new people: Mwandishi, Crossings, Sextant.

I saved up pop-bottle money and talked my older brother, who introduced me to B3 jazz with Lou Donaldson and Jack McDuff, into going half. When he went to college, the album went with him.

Yah, Cory Weeds is the real deal. If you dig the vibe on "The Many Deeds..." definitely check out his last 2 albums as well. They are just as impressive.

Thanks for the comment. The only "Hampton Hawes At The Piano" album I could find was the 1976 release on Contemporary Records, which is a different record. My personal research still yields no results for "Spanish Steps" on CD even under another name, except for the release noted above that combines "Spanish Steps" with "Blues For Bud" (both recorded at the same session for Black Lion).

A frend of mine, a bassist, said me a few days ago this first Miles' Columbia is Paul Chambers' masterpiece. He says every bass player should study his lines here to learn how to play double-bass in a modern jazz context.

Hi. Thank you for your fine Blog and interesting comments about piano master Hampton Hawes. I thought I'd drop by to comment about this Black Lion session: it has been out in CD twice (lately with an upgraded digital mapping) titled Hampton Hawes At The Piano, for Black LIon itself. I had both versions since I love many records from Hawes ( and bass great Jimmy Woode too) and this is still one of my favourite. Best drum kit sound ever (Art Taylor playing deserved such an acoustic hommage).

I was at this concert. By the end of the set only a handful of people were in the hall listening. Miles eventually became bored and pissed. We all came back when BB King came on.
