The Lounge Lizards 1981 self-titled debut record is not easily classified, musically speaking. It is often put in the jazz-punk or Zappa-ish genre, which one could make a case for, but I would place it firmly in the post-bop category. It does have very noisy and violent moments (John Zorn’s Naked City definitely owes much to this recording), but the overall feel is rooted heavily in jazz. One of many interesting facts about this album is that it was produced by jazz legend Teo Macero, a man known for breaking down jazz barriers when necessary (see: Miles Davis “Bitches Brew”).
