Listening Room – “Farmer’s Market”

Farmer's Market

Art Farmer – Ad-dis-un

Art Farmer – By Myself

Art Farmer – Walkin’ With Hank

From “Farmer’s Market” : 1956 : New Jazz NJLP 8203

“Farmer’s Market” teams up a group of young players who would all go on to have influential careers in jazz.  While Farmer and Mobley are clearly the headliners here, Kenny Drew’s piano playing is the true standout of the session.  Ad-dis-sun was written by Drew and is a swingin’ example of the cool jazz sound.  Mobley sits out on All By Myself which features some sublime muted trumpet playing by Farmer.  Walkin’ With Hank is a Mobley composition that clearly lays out the classic Blue Note hard bop sound that he and Lee Morgan would work to perfection only a few years later.

Players:
Art Farmer – Trumpet
Hank Mobley – Tenor Sax
Kenny Drew – Piano
Addison Farmer – Bass
Elvin Jones – Drums

Mirage

Art Farmer Quintet – “Barbados”

Art Farmer Quintet – “My Kinda Love”

Art Farmer Quintet – “Mirage”

From “Mirage” : 1982 : Soul Note 121046-2

A nice post-CTI recording from Art Farmer, who put together a killer group for the occasion.  Clifford Jordan is in great form and a young Fred Hersch shows off the skills that would make him one of the great jazz pianists of his generation.  The opening track Barbados and the title track nicely set up a hard bop tone for the rest of the album, while My Kind of Love throws in some stellar cool jazz to the proceedings.

Players:
Art Farmer – Flugelhorn
Clifford Jordan – Tenor Sax
Fred Hersch – Piano
Ray Drummond – Bass
Akira Tana – Drums

Listening Room – “Crawl Space”

Crawl Space

Art Farmer – Crawl Space

Art Farmer – Chanson

From “Crawl Space” :  1977 :  CTI 7073

This out-of-print LP finds Art Farmer leading a talented group in four very relaxed and spacious compositions.  There is great interplay between the band and even though the music is laid back there is lots of interesting playing throughout.  All of Farmer’s late 70′s CTI albums are worth trying to track down.

Players:
Art Farmer – Fluglehorn
Jeremy Steig – Flute
Eric Gale – Guitar
Dave Grusin – Keyboards
George Mraz – Bass
Will Lee – Bass
Steve Gadd – Drums

Listening Room – “Cool Struttin’”

Blue Note released this beyond classic Sonny Clark record in 1958.  Featuring a group of young players (including a then relatively unknown Jackie Mclean) “Cool Struttin’” is considered by some to be one of the best examples of Hard Bop ever made.  The two Clark compositions – the title track and Blue Minor – have both entered the jazz repertoire, and the two remaining tracks Miles Davis’ Sippin’ at Bells and Henderson & Valle’s Deep Night are just as classic.  A legendary record from the very underrated talent of Sonny Clark, all of whose records are well worth checking out.
