Listening Room – “Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus”

Mingus Presents Mingus

Charles Mingus – “Original Faubus Fables”

Charles Mingus – “What Love?”

From “Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus” : 1960 : Candid Records

Released in 1960 on the Candid Records label, Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus actually features a relatively small band by Mingus’ normal standards.  Original Faubus Fables is a classic and was a scathing attack on the segregationist Arkansas governor Orval Faubus.  What Love? is a complex piece that borders on free jazz and was written by Mingus in the 1940′s but wasn’t recorded until 1960 when Eric Dolphy discovered it and urged Mingus to revive it.

Players:
Charles Mingus – Bass
Eric Dolphy – Alto Sax, Bass Clarinet, Flute
Ted Curson – Trumpet
Dannie Richmond – Drums
