Listening Room – “Farmer’s Market”

Farmer's Market

Art Farmer - Ad-dis-un

Art Farmer - By Myself

Art Farmer - Walkin' With Hank

From "Farmer's Market" : 1956 : New Jazz NJLP 8203

"Farmer's Market" teams up a group of young players who would all go on to have influential careers in jazz.  While Farmer and Mobley are clearly the headliners here, Kenny Drew's piano playing is the true standout of the session.  Ad-dis-sun was written by Drew and is a swingin' example of the cool jazz sound.  Mobley sits out on All By Myself which features some sublime muted trumpet playing by Farmer.  Walkin' With Hank is a Mobley composition that clearly lays out the classic Blue Note hard bop sound that he and Lee Morgan would work to perfection only a few years later.

Players:
Art Farmer - Trumpet
Hank Mobley - Tenor Sax
Kenny Drew - Piano
Addison Farmer - Bass
Elvin Jones - Drums

A great example of the classic Blue Note hard bop sound, "Byrd in Flight" features some of the labels finest players from the early 1960's joining Donald Byrd including Hank Mobley and Duke Pearson.  For some reason this album is currently out of print, it was issued on CD in 1996 as part of the Blue Note Connoisseur Series but is no longer available.  Enjoy!!

Listening Room – “Mustang!”

Mustang

Donald Byrd - Mustang

Donald Byrd - On The Trail

From "Mustang!" : 1966 : Blue Note BLP 4238

"Mustang!" is a straight ahead jazz session featuring some of the top horn players in the Blue Note stables at the time.  Donald Byrd is joined by Hank Mobley and Sonny Red and all three play together wonderfully.  Also sitting in on the session is McCoy Tyner, who adds some great piano lines to the hard bop mix.  A refreshing record from 1966 that stays in the pocket while much of the jazz world was straying into free jazz and the avant-garde.

Players:
Donald Byrd - Trumpet
Hank Mobley - Tenor Sax
Sonny Red - Alto Sax
McCoy Tyner - Piano
Walter Booker - Bass
Freddie Waits - Drums

Listening Room – “4, 5 and 6″

4, 5 and 6

Jackie McLean - Abstraction

Jackie McLean - Confirmation

From "4,5 and 6" : 1956 : Prestige PRLP 7048

A bit of pre-Blue Note Jackie McLean, "4, 5 and 6" was released in 1956 on Prestige Records.  The title refers to the fact that McLean performs with a quartet, quintet and on one track (Confirmation) is joined by Hank Mobley to make the group a sextet.  A great early Hard Bop session that just starts to hints at the classic records McLean would head up only a few years later.

Players:
Jackie McLean - Alto Sax
Hank Mobley - Tenor Sax
Donald Byrd - Trumpet
Mal Waldron - Piano
Doug Watkins - Bass
Art Taylor - Bass

Listening Room – “Workout” & “Another Workout”

Workout

Another Workout

Hank Mobley - Uh Huh

Hank Mobley - Smokin'

From "Workout" : 1961 : Blue Note Records

Hank Mobley - Out of Joe's Bag

Hank Mobley - Gettin' and Jettin'

From "Another Workout" : 1961 : Blue Note Records

One of my all-time favorite jazz records, "Workout" was recorded for Blue Note in 1961 when Hank Mobley was coming into his own as a player and composer.  Mobley assembled a young group of players including Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers, as well as the young guitarist Grant Green who added a great sound to Mobley's four originals on the record.  Highlights include Uh-Huh and Smokin'.

"Another Workout" was recorded later in the year in 1961 and has the same players as "Workout" with the exception of Green.  For whatever reason, and not uncommon for Blue Note sessions in the 1960's, "Another Workout" didn't see the light of day until 1985 and didn't really get a proper release until the RVG Edition was released in 2006.

Players:

On "Workout"

Hank Mobley - Tenor Sax
Grant Green - Guitar
Wynton Kelly - Piano
Paul Chambers - Piano
Philly Joe Jones - Drums

On "Another Workout"

Hank Mobley - Tenor Sax
Wynton Kelly - Piano
Paul Chambers - Piano
Philly Joe Jones - Drums
