Listening Room – “Avatar”

For this 2008 release, the ultra-talented pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba put together a group made up of veterans of the New York City jazz scene, in particular the saxophonist Yosvani Terry and drummer Marcus Gilmore.  The music on “Avatar” is rhythmically complex, funky, forward looking and infused with the sound of Latin Jazz – very often all in the same song.  This is the sound of modern jazz at it’s finest.

Listening Room – “Superimposition”

Eddie Palmieri (who is still recording great music today) released “Superimposition” on the Tico Records label in 1970.  The album is revered by fans of Latin Jazz and is considered one of Palmieri’s finest records.  His smokin’ hot backing band “Conjunto La Perfecta” was simply one of the best salsa bands to step foot in a recording studio.  A mix of standards and a couple of originals, standout tracks include the classic Bilongo and Palmieri’s own 17.1.
