Happening clip of Herbie Hancock (piano), Chiristian McBride (bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums) performing a really nice version of Hancock’s Toys from 1968′s “Speak Like a Child”.

Joe Pass – “Donna Lee”
Video footage from 1979 of guitar great Joe Pass and bass virtuoso Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen performing the Charlie Parker tune Donna Lee. Pass and Ørsted Pedersen played together often throughout their careers and the symbiotic relationship they developed is on full display in this amazing clip.
Anthony Braxton Quartet Live 1981
Amazing stuff from Anthony Braxton recorded live in Hamburg, Germany in 1981. Lineup is Braxton on the soprano sax, Hugh Ragin on trumpet, Ray Anderson on trombone and Marilyn Crispell on piano. This is the same lineup that appears on Braxton’s classic 1981 album “Composition 98″.
Freddie Hubbard 1975 – “Straight Life”
Hot clip of Freddie Hubbard playing his composition Straight Life at the 1975 Downbeat Awards. He’s joined by Chick Corea on the keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on drums and Airto masterfully working the percussion. The picture quality is not the best, but it is great performance by a group of legendary players.
Phineas Newborn, Jr. – “Theme For Basie”
This is a broadcast of Phineas Newborn, Jr. performing his compostition “Theme For Basie”. He is accompanied by Al Mckibbon on bass and Kenny Dennis on the drums. One can see why Newborn was considered one of the most technically skilled jazz pianists by those that heard and saw him perform.
Joe Henderson & Herbie Hancock – “Lush Life”
This is video from 1993 with Joe Henderson and Herbie Hancock performing a great version of Billy Strayorn’s Lush Life. The occaision was a celebration of the 40th anniversery of the Newport Jazz Festival held on the lawn of the White House. Very nice stuff.
Bill Evans Trio – “Waltz For Debbie”
Not sure of the exact year, but most likely somewhere between 1962 – 1965, this is piano great Bill Evans joined by Chuck Israels on Bass and Larry Bunker on Drums performing Evan’s classic track Waltz For Debby. This group released many great trio records in the 1960′s all of which are worth acquiring.
Miles Davis Live in Vienna 1973
Here is some killer footage from Miles deep into his funk-fusion period. I love the shots of the whole band, really giving you the feeling of what it was like to be there in 1973 watching these guys do their thing. You gotta love it: Miles in his happening platform shoes playing trumpet with his wah pedal, Reggie Lucas on lead guitar sitting down and going to town on that Strat, James Mtume and Al Foster somehow keeping that neverending beat right in the groove. Not entirely sure what the tune is, stuff I’ve read on this period says sometimes the band didn’t even know the name of the tune, but it is definitly has elements of tracks (Directions, Turnaroundphrase, Moja) from the period. The other players are Dave Liebman on Alto Sax, Pete Cosey on Rhythm Guitar, Michael Henderson on Bass and Al Foster on Drums. [Note: The second video seems to have been ripped at a higher volume and slightly better resolution.]
Ahmad Jamal Trio “Darn That Dream”
This is the Ahmad Jamal Trio performing Darn That Dream in 1959. Joining Jamal is Israel Crosby on the bass and Vernell Fournier on the drums. Easy to see how Jamal’s easy laid back style was so influentional on the Cool Jazz movement starting to take hold around this time.
Art Farmer Quartet “Recorda Me”
Nice footage from 1982 of the Art Farmer Quartet performing Joe Henderson’s classic track Recorda Me. The group is Art Farmer on Fluglehorn, Fred Hersch on Piano, Dennis Irwin on Bass and Billy Hart on the drums. The whole band is inspired, but be sure to check out Hersch’s solo starting about 2:45 – it’s brilliant stuff.
